Fragokastello is a small historic village beside the Libyan Sea in the South of Crete. It takes its name from a castle the Venetians build in 1371 which remains in good condition until today. The castle was built to protect the coast from the pirates and its history is filled with the many battles between Venetians, Turks and Greeks.

 

The fortress is placed on the top o beautiful sandy beach called “orthi Ammos”. A beach with many sandy hills you have to visit.

According to a local myth a strange phenomenon called “Drosoulites” occurs every year in May or June. “Drosoulites” appear a few minutes before sunrise. There are people dressed in black, walking and riding horses, going towards the fortress and when they reach the sea disappear. Many people have tried to explain it, but still there is no accepted scientific explanation.
